Heirloom beet
When I pulled this beet out of the ground, I had to paint it. I put it into a bucket of water right in the field, to be sure its shape would not start to wilt before I made it home and could begin to sketch. The unreal color of root and leaf was a challenge. It seemed to naturally find its balance on the page.
