Measurement Kit and Ground Rules
CK explains that she has brought tools to use to measure
elements in the habitat. We will conduct measurements with the tools at
each habitat and enter the information in records. We will also list plants
and animals observed in each habitat. The tools measure the percolation
rate of water into the soil, air and soil temperature, light and moisture.
CK explains there are things not to do.
We should stay on the trail, except when taking measurements in an area.
We should not pick up or pick plants and animals. This
is an area where they are all protected. But she says that we should have
a good time. Katy tells KC that the class is becoming stewards through The Nature Conservancy. KC says the experience
will last 1 hour and 45 minutes.
We go a bit down the trail and stop in a sandy area with dune grass. KC
has two measurement kits. She explains that there will be two groups. Each
will need a secretary to record the measurements, record the plants identified
and record signs of animals.
