Gym teacher after field measurements, as group begins hike in oak forest
We start off again down the hill. They move fast, loving the sense of run-falling down the slope. Mr. Sitz (gym teacher) comments to me, "The kids need that, a little bit of burst of energy. They need to take a break."

The art teacher talks to me about the importance of hiking and being in nature for suburban kids. She says she has often asked kids at school whether they have camped or hiked. Mostly the have done activities out doors like sailing or skiing, "But few have been in it," she says sadly.

Charlotte is standing next to me. She comments, "If you don't teach the children young enough, they won't get this. And then its too late."
