Old yellow iris
These old fashioned iris were beloved by my mother and grandmother. We found them again in Pam Cate's garden, and were thrilled to dig them up and transplant them to Iowana Farm, my sister's organic farm in Crescent, IA. On Veteran's Day, we cut them and bring them to the cemetary. The Crescent cemetery does not permit plants or flower holders at the graves. These thick stems let you push them directly into the ground, creating a beautiful display. Our generations are buried here. It is good to bring the flowers they love to mom, grandma and great-grandma in such a beautiful way. This is a pencil study I did in the garden. Maybe I will paint them someday.
